CME’s share of XRP futures jumps as token rallies 40% in a week

XRP’s 40% weekly surge toward the $1.40 mark masks a fundamental structural rotation in how market participants are positioning for the asset's momentum. As the token retested multi-year highs, open interest across offshore derivatives platforms plunged by over 500 million XRP in just fourteen days. Conversely, exposure on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) surged by roughly 36%, signaling a decisive pivot away from speculative, highly leveraged crypto-native trading toward regulated institutional liquidity.
This pronounced divergence points to a violent leverage flush on crypto-native exchanges like Binance and Bybit, where high-leverage perpetual futures frequently catalyze cascading liquidations during rapid price expansions. The sharp drawdown in offshore open interest indicates that aggressive short positions were systematically squeezed out, while retail traders simultaneously took profits into the strength of the rally. On the CME, however, the expansion in open interest reflects fresh capital allocation through U.S.-regulated, cash-settled contracts, suggesting macro funds and traditional financial institutions are driving the current leg of the advance.
The migration to the CME coincides with broader shifts in market sentiment regarding U.S. crypto regulation. Growing anticipation of a more favorable regulatory framework, combined with market speculation surrounding potential spot XRP exchange-traded fund (ETF) filings, has spurred participation from institutional desks that are strictly prohibited from trading on unregulated offshore venues. This venue shift drastically alters XRP’s underlying financial infrastructure: shrinking offshore open interest diminishes the threat of sudden liquidation cascades that historically trigger severe flash crashes, while CME’s growing market share anchors price discovery within institutional risk-management frameworks.
From a technical perspective, this open interest redistribution establishes a remarkably clean market structure despite the velocity of the 40% push. Rallies sustained primarily by high offshore funding rates and retail margin often collapse under the weight of sudden deleveraging events. With offshore leverage flushed out and institutional open interest rising on domestic venues, XRP’s rally exhibits traits of spot-driven demand and institutional accumulation, providing a far sturdier footing as the asset confronts heavy overhead resistance at $1.40.
